Homeopathy is Not a One-Size-Fits-All Approach to Allergies

Last updated on July 21st, 2022 at 09:58 am

If you lead an active life, then you certainly don’t want an allergy treatment that will interfere with your normal everyday functioning. This is where homeopathic medicines can help relieve bothersome allergy symptoms and, in the worst cases, decrease the need for heavy medication.

Homeopathy is not a “one-size-fits-all approach” to treating allergies, according to Boiron’s pharmacist Christophe Merville. He says there are several homeopathic medicines that can offer relief based on an individual’s needs and they will not interfere with medications already being taken or cause unwanted drowsiness.

For some of the more common allergy symptoms, Dr. Merville recommends the following single medicines:

Allium cepa
This homeopathic preparation of the onion bulb can help with an allergic or viral runny nose. Allium is used when nasal discharge is clear, watery and an irritant in the nostrils as well as spasmodic, fitful sneezing and itchy eyes usually from hay fever at the first stages and improved by cold air.*

Apis mellifica
Apis is made from the honey bee and provides relief when the skin or mucous membranes are swollen, pink-red, itching and are improved by cold applications. Apis can be used during hay fever episodes.*

Histaminum hydrochloricum
This homeopathic medicine, which is derived from histamine, can provide relief of hay fever, hives or even a reaction to an insect bite.*

Natrum muriaticum
This homeopathic preparation of sea salt has many different indications for chronic conditions including respiratory allergies often recurrent in children and sun allergies where itching and a rash is triggered by sun exposure.*

Urtica urens
Urtica urens is a homeopathic dilution of Dwarf nettle. This stinging nettle plant causes urticaria, which are red, itchy skin lesions and are very similar to hives. Its main indication is skin rash due to food allergies.*

Allium cepa and Histaminum are two of the active ingredients found in Sabadil, a homeopathic combination medicine for allergy symptoms. Sabadil temporarily relieves one or more of these symptoms of hay fever or other upper respiratory allergies: itchy and watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, and itchy throat and nose.*
