Stressed Out and Sleepless in America: New Findings on Parenting and Work Stress

Daylight saving time often poses challenges to bedtime routines. Whether you spring forward and lose an hour of sleep or fall back and gain an hour, it disrupts your natural sleep pattern. The adjustment may be even tougher for families this year, as many are already struggling with work-induced sleep problems from the pandemic.

A new survey of 2,000 parents of school-aged children found that nearly half are unable to fall asleep at night, and work stress is mostly to blame. Eighty-four percent revealed that the transition from remote to office work, or vice versa, disturbed their sleep schedule. And almost three-quarters of parents reported catching more ZZZ’s during the summer than during the school year.

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Boiron’s sleep aid SleepCalm, the survey also examined the bedtime habits of Americans and what they do to cope.

Tired of Counting Sheep

Counting sheep to fall asleep is said to be an age-old tactic, but it’s really not what people do when they’re tossing and turning. Instead, 45% of respondents said they turn off their cell phone or put it on silent mode to catch up on uninterrupted slumber. And on sleepless nights, 46% of parents use the time to catch up on their favorite TV series.

Turning to Extra Help

Getting good quality sleep is essential for everyone, but it’s especially important for parents who need to juggle multiple responsibilities without getting burned out. When it comes to over-the-counter sleep options, many prefer taking natural products that won’t affect their alertness. Sixty-two percent of those surveyed use a sleep supplement with melatonin or homeopathic sleep aid to help them get some shut-eye. However, 56% of those who’ve used melatonin reported next-day grogginess.

Homeopathic sleep aids are an excellent option for families because they’re non-habit forming and work without risk of daytime drowsiness. SleepCalm is made with plant-based and other pure active ingredients that rebalance waking and sleeping states to produce healthy, restorative sleep.* It’s available in meltaway tablets for adults and children ages 12 and older, as well as pre-measured liquid doses for younger kids ages 3 and older.
