Maintaining a fitness routine has never been more important than now. Not only does it boost your body’s defenses against illness, but it also reduces stress and helps keep you at a healthy weight — two factors to consider when you’re spending more time indoors.
No gym? No problem. You don’t need fancy or expensive equipment to stay in shape. These home workout ideas will help keep you active in whatever space you have.
Equipment-free strength training
Break a sweat without picking up any equipment. All you need is your own body to provide resistance. Four exercises to try are squats, burpees, planks, and push-ups. These will challenge your muscles while gravity does the work. Learn to do these moves properly by watching this video.
Jump rope for cardio
Jump rope is making a comeback, and for good reasons. It’s easy to do in a small space and provides a great cardio workout. The best part is that you don’t need to spend a lot of time to get the benefits. According to the Cooper Institute Aerobic Test, jumping rope for 10 minutes is equivalent to a 30-minute run!
Go with the (virtual) flow
If you’re missing your gym instructor or the fitness class atmosphere, there are plenty of virtual options available. YouTube is an excellent resource for free workout videos. Also, check out this easy, 10-minute yoga flow video from health coach and fitness expert Stephanie Mansour. Her show, Step It Up with Steph, is sponsored by Arnicare and airs weekly on local public TV stations.
