The back-to-school season can be hard on the whole family. On top of parents shopping for supplies and scheduling new fall activities, children often struggle to get back on a regular sleep schedule after a long, leisurely summer. Many turn to melatonin to help their kids sleep, but is it really the best choice and are there other alternatives?
Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain and it regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Although considered a “natural” solution, most melatonin supplements are synthetic. Another concern is that these supplements are not accurately labeled and there’s a risk that may contain more or less melatonin than the amount listed on the bottle. Taking too much may actually interfere with the body’s natural production of melatonin, and regular use could also cause daytime drowsiness, dizziness, and other unwanted effects.
Rather than relying on synthetic supplements, parents can use a homeopathic sleep aid like Boiron’s SleepCalm Kids. This medicine is uniquely formulated with plant-based and other pure active ingredients to address the things that occasionally keep kids from sleeping, like upsets, excitement, and schedule changes.* And because it doesn’t contain melatonin, children will not experience next-day grogginess at school.
SleepCalm is available in pre-measured liquid doses for children ages 3 and up, and meltaway tablets for everyone ages 12 and up. Click here to find SleepCalm in a store near you.

It would be helpful for you to say what is in your formula.
Hi Debbie, SleepCalm contains homeopathic preparations of passionflower, nutmeg, and other plants. You can find all the ingredients here on the package.

My 6 year old granddaughter can’t do liquid supplements due to gag reflux. Do you have chewable pills for a 6 year old?
Hello Becky, the SleepCalm tablets are for ages 12 and up, unfortunately. However, SleepCalm Kids liquid doses are designed to be absorbed in the mouth and not swallowed. There’s only a small amount of liquid medicine in the tube (less than one ounce) so it should not trigger gagging. Hope that helps!
Shame on you for the “synthetic hormones” scare tactic! “Synthetic,” in the sense they are synthesized in a lab. But BIO-IDENTICAL. Unless you want us to go back to the good old days we got melatonin from pig brains. By this same standard, 99% of the vitamin C pills are “synthetic” too. Vitamin D is “synthetic” and a “hormone.” In fact, technically speaking, it’s an anabolic steroid. Let’s not scare people.
Hi Adam, we hear you. Melatonin is a very useful supplement, especially for jet lag and night shift work. For people who can’t take it or don’t want to, homeopathic sleep aids offer an alternative choice.
Are there possible reactions for taking this? Only use as needed?
🙏 thank you 😊
Hi Mary, there is a very low risk of side effects when using SleepCalm or SleepCalm Kids. Homeopathic medicines are one of the safest classes of drugs for over-the-counter use. SleepCalm medicines are indicated for occasional use up to 3 days.
What is the best all day calming aid for a over active 4 year old.
Hi Clara! We recommend consulting with a health professional to determine the cause prior to self-medication. Thank you!
