Nux Vomica for When Too Much of a Good Thing Goes Wrong

Life is all about balance, but that’s easier said than done! Once the holidays roll around, it’s natural to let loose and indulge. Those who work hard and play even harder know full well about the unpleasant consequences that can follow. This is where the popular homeopathic medicine Nux vomica can come in handy for when too much is just too much.

Nux Vomica Preparations

Homeopathic Nux vomica is made from the seeds of the Strychnine tree (Strychnos nux-vomica), which is native to Southeast Asia, particularly India. The raw seeds contain a toxic amount of strychnine alkaloids that have therapeutic action at certain, lower doses. To prevent lethal effects, ancient Chinese and Indian healers would process the seeds before using medicinally in the treatment of nervous, cardiovascular, and digestive system disorders. The seed’s bitter taste also made them useful as a stimulant to improve digestion and appetite.

A Medicine Cabinet Mainstay

Homeopathic Nux vomica is prepared in a safe, microdosed form and continues to be a useful medicine for gastrointestinal issues. It relieves nausea and cramps from indigestion, especially after excessive eating of spicy food or drinking coffee or alcohol.* There are several homeopathic medicines for indigestion, and Nux vomica works best for people that are easily irritable, have a sedentary life, and tend to eat too fast and too much.

You will find Nux vomica as an active ingredient in Acidil where it relieves heartburn from excessive eating and drinking, and in HemCalm Tablets for painful hemmorhoids associated with overeating and sedentary lifestyles.*

I very successfully use nux vomica for gerd issues, but one thing is very annoying — printed in large letters on the packaging it says FOR HANGOVERS, or something like that. When I make my purchase, I don’t want people/cashiers to see FOR HANGOVERS in large print, thinking that I’m someone who drinks, because I don’t. Wish you would consider removing that wording on the 3-pack.

    1. Hi Darlene, thanks for this feedback. I’ve passed it along to our product team for consideration on future packaging.

Hey Darlene, I am extremely interested in knowing the dosage and frequency you took for your GERD. Thanks so much! 🙏

    3. You shouldn’t feel self conscious about what you’re buying. People and the cashier pay no mind to that stuff so you’re probably overthinking things. Personally I bought this product because it says it’s for hangovers as well as all the other benefits listed on the packaging. The bottles are tiny and nobody is gonna judge you for taking care of yourself

  2. Since this labeling has been in place I too would like the use of “Good for Hangovers ” as the main advertising for this fine product to be change as i have watched folks use it get those results and go right back to drinking the very next day with the misinformed concept they can just take this remedy regularly and “all will be hunkydory when it really won’t. Advertising a Homeopathy remedy in this manner is a for Profit play rather than for Health support and I say Shame on You !!!

    1. Hi Halie, we appreciate your honest feedback about our packaging. I’ve notified our product team about your concerns.

  4. For treatment of acidity, reflux, gas, constipation, three drops of Nux Vomica 30 thrice in a day before half an hour of meal for continue one month is O.K.? Please advice/consult/suggest

    1. Hi Harish, we recommend Nux vomica pellets and not liquid drops unless under the care of a physician. The standard dosage is 5 pellets of Nux vomica at the onset of symptoms and every hour until symptoms improve, or three times a day. You may take this medicine 15 minutes before a meal if needed.

      1. I’ve been taking that dosage ( 5 pellets) every morning and it has nearly cured me of my severe GERD and reflux. I had a gastric sleeve surgery 5 years ago which I regret. I am so grateful for the knowledge of healthy eating, having good gut health and primarily homeopathic medicine for healing me and without everyone day reflux pain. It’s a miracle homeopathic medicine for me!

        1. Hi Annie, thank you for sharing your experience and we’re so glad to hear you’ve found relief with homeopathy! Since GERD is a chronic condition, make sure to talk to your doctor first about using over-the-counter medicines like Nux vomica for an extended period of time.

    1. Hello! As a manufacturer, we offer over-the-counter medicines with clear indications for acute conditions that can be safely relieved with self-medication. Each medicine is labeled with the most common acute condition it relieves. However, health care professionals may instruct their patients to use the medicine for other conditions not listed on the label. There may be a homeopathic treatment that addresses your condition, but we recommend consulting a practitioner knowledgeable in homeopathy. Be well!

  9. Is this Acidil with Nux Vomica safer than Proton Pump Inhibitors? PPIs harm the kidneys. I’ve been on them for years. Looking for a safer alternative. Is the strychnine safe to take?
    Thanks
    H. Moore

    1. Hello, homeopathic medicines like Acidil and Nux vomica have an extremely low risk of side effects, and they are not known to interact with other medications, unlike proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). They are an excellent alternative for people who cannot use or don’t want to take PPIs. Boiron uses pharmaceutical ingredients of the highest quality. These medicines are prepared homeopathically, which removes the toxic properties of the original substance and makes it safe for over-the-counter use. You also call us at 1-800-BOIRON-1 if you have any more questions!
