It’s that time of year again, when cough, colds and flu run rampant. It’s been said that eating healthy and balanced meals can help your body fight off illnesses. General practitioner Dr. Lawrence Rosen, author of Treatment Alternatives for Children, recommends incorporating these foods into your diet:
- Lemon: The antibacterial and antiviral properties of the lemon is thought to boost immunity. Lemon may help heal an irritated throat.
- Maitake Mushrooms: Extracts of the maitake mushroom have been found to stimulate phagocytes, white blood cells that target bacteria. One study found that combining maitake extracts and the Ayurvedic herb ashwagandha helped reduce stress and boost immunity.
- Onion: Not only is onion a great option to enhance the flavor of your favorite dish, but it is said to have antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is also thought to help the body break up mucus when an individual is sick with a cold or another virus.
- Yogurt: The probiotics in yogurt are not only believed to support good digestive health, but may also help stave off colds.
