Mother Nature is beautiful but harsh. Nowhere is that more apparent than during winter. We’re briefly dazzled with scenes of peaceful snowfall and evergreens, and then we’re left to contend with the biting weather, busy holidays and travel, and long, dark nights.
Fortunately, homeopathy offers a myriad of solutions to common cold weather problems that affect our bodies. Homeopathy expert and author Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na), has some recommendations on what homeopathic medicines you and your household might need the most this season.
“Grueling winter temperatures means there’s a good chance your skin will take a beating,” says Calabrese. Chapped skin is especially common. She recommends Petroleum to relieve fissures and cracked skin that is aggravated by the cold.*
Though more often used for symptoms of food poisoning, Calabrese suggests Arsenicum album to relieve intense burning that is improved by heat.* And for itchy and swollen skin, especially burning skin or lips that find relief in cold compresses, she advises using Apis mellifica.*
Cold and flu activity traditionally peak during winter months as well. “When flu comes around with extreme exhaustion as the main symptom, you can take Gelsemium,” says Calabrese. It relieves flu-like symptoms with fever, headache, dizziness, and general weakness.* Also consider Eupatorium perfoliatum, which is used to relieve bone pain and body aches associated with flu and severe colds.*
Calabrese explains that Natrum muriaticum may be useful when you experience excessive sneezes with clear mucus.* It should be taken at the first onset. If you have lingering symptoms, which she describes as a cough or nasal congestion after a severe cold or flu, then Sulphur iodatum will help.*
