Boiron was founded in 1932 by twin brothers and pharmacists Jean and Henri Boiron, both of whom studied science and microbiology and earned doctorate diplomas in pharmacy. The men, who were looking for work after finishing school, accepted an offer from fellow pharmacist Rene Baudry, who at the time was involved with several homeopathic projects, to help him start a company. In 1932, the brothers founded the Central Homeopathic Laboratory of France in Paris.
The brothers’ training in and knowledge of the natural sciences were bonuses that proved essential to the development and production of homeopathic medicines, which became their daily task.
A Growing Family Company
In 1967, after merging with other homeopathic laboratories of which the men were involved, the Central Homeopathic Laboratory expanded to become Boiron Laboratories. In 1974, the head offices and production plant moved into the suburbs in Ste Foy-lès-Lyon, near Lyon, France.
Throughout his career, Jean Boiron was particularly interested in research, and his extensive work in homeopathic medicine led to the development of production processes used today.
Henri Boiron, meanwhile, promoted the spread of homeopathy at the official level. In 1953, he was elected President of the National Syndicate of Homeopathic Pharmacists, a position he held for 28 years. In 1955, he founded the International Committee of Homeopathic Pharmacists. One of the peak moments in his career was the introduction of homeopathy into the French Pharmacopoeia in 1965.
Boiron Laboratories continued work on the development of homeopathic medicine and strengthened its distribution network by opening more than two dozen regional establishments.
With distribution in more than 50 countries, Boiron has subsidiaries in Spain, Canada, the Caribbean, Italy, Belgium, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Brazil, Russia, Switzerland, Tunisia, Morocco and the U.S.
