How to Manage Hemorrhoid Flare-Ups at Home

Last updated on July 21st, 2022 at 12:15 pm

If you’ve ever experienced the discomfort of a hemorrhoid, you know just how painful it can get. And what’s worse is not knowing if or when it will happen again. Several factors could put you at risk for hemorrhoid flare-ups, including what you eat, how much you weigh, your bathroom habits, your job, and even pregnancy.

Hemorrhoids occur internally or externally, and you may experience just one or have several at a time. Symptoms include burning, itching, swelling, stinging, bleeding, and pain. There are several self-care measures you can take at home to minimize discomfort and help hemorrhoids heal faster.

Soak regularly. Experts recommend a warm soak to soothe irritation, especially after each bowel movement. You can do this in a tub or by using a sitz bath that fits over your toilet.

Clean carefully. After a bowel movement, avoid wiping with dry toilet paper, which can further irritate sore tissue. Instead, gently clean by patting or blotting with moistened toilet tissue or a soft cloth.

Use over-the-counter treatments. Hemorrhoid medicines available off the shelf can provide the relief you need. Boiron offers three solutions, known as HemCalm, available in a soothing ointment, internal suppositories, and oral tablets. With plant-based active ingredients, these medicines help shrink swollen tissue while relieving itching, burning, pain, and discomfort. HemCalm can also be used for hemorrhoid symptoms following childbirth.*

Keep your bottom cool and dry.  Unbreathable fabrics and friction can create a buildup of sweat between your buttocks that will cause even more itchiness and discomfort. Choose loose-fitting clothing and undergarments made from natural fabrics like cotton. Cornstarch or baby powder can also help keep your posterior dry.

  1. STEPHEN PLACE

Of primary importance, those suffering with hemorrhoids, please eliminate any and all forms of peanuts and peanut butter. One week without peanuts and you will be a new man. Try it, you’ll like it!

  2. The suppositories did wonder to me, but I have the feeling I need to keep taking them, or the problem will reoccur. Not sure yet. But yes, on a short term, it’s the best medicine.
