When you’re a mom there’s no such thing as a sick day. The show must go on — the children have to get to school, dinner must be prepared and household tasks must be done. There’s no rest for the weary mom, even when she has the flu. However, when dad gets sick it may be a different story. A study from the American Journal of Physiology—Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology suggests that biological differences may contribute to how women and men react to illnesses, at least when it comes to flu.
The study examined how estrogen—the female sex hormone— affects how quickly the flu virus replicates in men and women. The more the virus replicates the more severe the individual will experience the flu, and the more likely they are to spread it to others. Researchers found that the flu virus did not replicate as much in female participants as it did in male participants. In other words, men may actually experience symptoms of the flu more severely than women.
Regardless of who has the flu in your household, homeopathic medicines can offer some relief. When you start experiencing that run down feeling, try Oscillococcinum. Take Oscillococcinum at the first sign of flu-like symptoms to reduce the duration and severity of body aches, headache, fever, chills and fatigue.* It can be used for everyone 2 and up.
